Three glass negatives record a wide sweep of the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, with a street running past the grounds. The views date from roughly 1900 to 1910, when the university was expanding beyond the modest buildings it had occupied since moving to Ann Arbor in 1837. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its town and travel views, made the set, which was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Numbers etched on each plate show the intended left-to-right order, which matters because the digital copies were filed out of sequence.
