This view shows the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor, a school that had grown from its 1817 founding into one of the largest public universities in the Midwest by the early 1900s. The picture is one of seven glass negatives in the Detroit Publishing Company Collection, a commercial photography firm that sold views of towns, landscapes and institutions across the country. Its record dates it only to between 1900 and 1915, so its exact date is uncertain. The notes also point out that the series was filed out of order and that one negative has a cracked corner, details that matter to anyone studying the set as a whole.
