Few views on this board show student life so directly: this glass negative records the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. It dates to between 1900 and 1910, a period when fraternity houses were becoming a common feature of American college towns, offering students meals, lodging and a social base beyond the classroom. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns, resorts and campuses across the country in those years, made the 8 by 10 inch negative, and its large format preserved considerable architectural detail. The record notes that the negative was a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
