Bellows Falls, a mill town on the Connecticut River in southeastern Vermont, is the setting here, with a post office and public library on a street that also carried streetcar tracks. Electric street railways reached many small New England towns in the early 1900s, and the tracks show how the town was being rebuilt for modern travel. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which recorded American towns, rail lines and scenery from the 1890s into the 1920s. The plate was later given to the Library of Congress by the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
