The Cary Memorial Library in Lexington, Massachusetts, is the subject of this glass-plate negative, one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of American towns and public buildings made in the early 1900s. The library was built in 1891 with funds from Maria Cary, given in memory of her husband, and it became one of the town's civic centers. Detroit Publishing Company, based in Michigan, sold views like this one as postcards and lantern slides, so the picture shows how a small New England library looked to a national market of travelers and collectors. The large 8 by 10 inch negative gives the building's stone and architectural detail a sharp, carefully composed record.
