This is the Lowell, Massachusetts, home of Benjamin Franklin Butler, the Union general who later served in Congress and as governor of Massachusetts. Butler gained national notice in 1862 as the commander of Union forces occupying New Orleans, where his strict policies earned him the nickname "Beast" and lasting resentment across the South. This c1908 view was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and landmarks for wide sale in the early twentieth century, and it shows the house about fifteen years after Butler's death in 1893.
