The building shown is the dormitory of the normal school in North Adams, Massachusetts, a teacher-training institution that housed students who had come from elsewhere in the state to study there. The picture was made between 1900 and 1910 as a large 8 x 10 inch glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, institutions and scenery for sale as views. Normal schools of this era were central to expanding public education, so a residence hall like this one reflects how far students traveled to prepare as teachers.
