Looking north from the town square, this view follows Essex Street, the main shopping thoroughfare of Salem, Massachusetts, as it appeared in the 1910s. The picture is a glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed towns and scenic sites across the United States for sale to travelers and publishers in the decades around 1900. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, and it offers a useful record of a New England commercial street in the years before the automobile reshaped city life.
