The Narbonne House at 71 Essex Street is one of the older surviving dwellings in Salem, Massachusetts, a city where houses from the seventeenth century are now uncommon. This large glass negative, made around 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, records the street-facing front of the building during the years when the company was photographing American towns and landmarks for sale as views. The negative is numbered "54" and carries the company's catalog number, and it reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
