Few houses in Salem have stood as long as the Pickering House at 18 Broad Street, which dates to the mid-1600s and takes its name from the family that long owned it. This ca. 1910 view was made on a glass dry plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country to document towns, streets and historic buildings for sale as prints and postcards. Interest in Salem's colonial architecture grew in the early 1900s, which helps explain why a house like this was worth recording. The negative has a break at the upper left, repaired with tape, a reminder of how fragile glass plates could be after decades in storage.
