The front doorway of the Dodge-Shreve House at 29 Chestnut Street is the focus here, and the catalog's subject headings single it out for that reason. Chestnut Street grew into one of Salem's most admired streets in the decades after 1800, lined with Federal-style houses built for merchants whose fortunes came from the China and East India trades. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns and landmarks for travel sales around 1900 to 1920, made this view as a glass dry plate negative, and its numbering suggests it was one scene in a large national survey.
