The entrance pictured here belongs to a new probate house in Salem, Massachusetts, a building where the county handled wills, estates, and guardianships. Its dating, between 1909 and 1920, places it in a period when many American towns were replacing older courthouses with larger, more formal civic buildings that signaled permanence and public trust. The picture was taken on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting towns and buildings across the country. The negative later came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, which helps explain how such a regional scene ended up in a national collection.
