The picture gallery at the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts, is shown here as a glass-plate negative made roughly between 1910 and 1920 by the Detroit Publishing Company. Its interior is crowded with framed portrait paintings hung close together from floor to ceiling, a common arrangement in nineteenth-century museums and historical societies that wanted to show as much of their collection as possible. The Essex Institute, founded in 1848, was one of the region's leading repositories for local history, and its galleries reflected Salem's long maritime and merchant past. The Detroit company made thousands of such views for travel publishers, so this negative preserves a record of how an early American historical museum looked before later reorganization.
