The doorway is the focus of this view of the Benjamin Hawkes House on Custom House Court in Salem, Massachusetts, taken around 1910 on a glass dry plate negative. Salem's merchant families built many houses in the Federal style in the decades after the Revolution, when the city's overseas trade made it one of the wealthiest ports in the country, and their entrances were often the most ornamented part of the facade. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this negative, sold views of American towns and landscapes to a national market in the early twentieth century, so the picture also records how a historic street looked to visitors of that period.
