The Pickering House in Salem, Massachusetts, is one of the city's older surviving dwellings, and this 1906 view records it as it looked in the early twentieth century, when Salem was drawing visitors interested in its colonial past. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and buildings for sale to travelers and publishers. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine architectural detail, such as the clapboards, window sash and doorway, that later reproductions often lose.
