Pittsfield, the largest city in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, is the setting for this glass-plate negative of North Street, made sometime between 1900 and 1915. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the late 1890s until about 1924, sent photographers across the country to document towns, rail lines and commercial districts, and its view-camera plates of main streets like this one captured storefronts, signs and the everyday traffic of a small industrial city in the early twentieth century. Subject headings for the plate note commercial facilities, so the buildings lining the street were likely its main interest. The 8 by 10 inch format gives unusually fine detail in the signage and street life.
