The road runs toward Cheshire, a hill town a few miles north of Pittsfield in the Berkshires, with mountains rising in the background. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, sent photographers across the country to document scenery, towns, and roads for postcards, travel booklets, and railroad promotions. Views like this one reflect the early twentieth-century interest in automobile touring and rural landscapes. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made using the dry plate process, which produced the sharp detail that made the company's images popular.
