East Street in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, is captured here as an ordinary residential thoroughfare, the kind of tree-lined block that filled the city's neighborhoods in the early twentieth century. The glass negative was made sometime between 1905 and 1915, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting towns and scenery across the United States, often for sale as postcards and lantern slides. Pittsfield, the county seat of Berkshire County, had grown into an industrial city by then, and its street scenes offer a glimpse of the houses and daily life supporting that growth. The plate reached the Library of Congress after a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
