The Hotel Aspinwall, photographed from its east lawn, stood in Lenox, Massachusetts, a Berkshire town that drew wealthy families from New York and Boston as a summer retreat during the Gilded Age. This view was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative between about 1905 and 1915, a period when resort hotels were central to the region's social life. The Detroit Publishing Company made many such views of American landmarks, often for travel promotion, and its glass negatives capture the broad lawns and grand architecture that defined the era's leisure destinations.
