Looking east along the sand at Swampscott, Massachusetts, this view shows a stretch of shore on the North Shore coast north of Boston, with boats resting on the beach and open water beyond. It was made as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large body of travel views, which the firm produced in the early 1900s and sold to tourists and collectors. The record gives its date only as a question mark around 1907, and the 8 by 10 inch glass negative is one of the many plates the company kept for printing. Scenes like this show how seaside towns were presented to summer visitors, with ordinary fishing and boating life sitting alongside leisure.
