Magnolia, a summer resort village within Gloucester on Cape Ann, is the setting here, with a bathing beach, rowboats drawn up or floating offshore, and large houses on a bluff in the distance. By the turn of the twentieth century, Magnolia had become a popular retreat for visitors from Boston and other nearby cities, who came for the sea air and the shore. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed scenic places across the United States around 1900 and printed them as postcards and views. This example survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that gave sharp detail for enlargement and printing.
