Nantasket Beach, on the Hull peninsula south of Boston, is the setting here, with the Atlantic House Hotel visible in the background. Around 1905, the period this negative is dated to, the beach drew large crowds of day-trippers who arrived by steamboat and railway from the city, making it one of New England's best-known seaside resorts. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative, built its reputation on views of American resorts, landscapes and towns. Because the date is only approximate, the scene is best read as a snapshot of the resort at the height of its popularity.
