This 8 x 10 inch glass negative shows Boynton Hall on the campus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. The school was founded in 1865 to teach applied science and engineering, a practical focus that set it apart from the classical colleges of the period. The picture was taken between 1890 and 1910, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting American towns, schools and landmarks for travel views and commercial sale. Its large format and original glass plate preserve fine architectural detail of the campus buildings from that era.
