Seelye Hall, the oldest surviving building on the Smith College campus in Northampton, Massachusetts, stands at the center of this glass-plate view. Smith was founded in 1871 as a women's college, and Seelye, completed in 1884, was its first major academic building, named for college president L. Clark Seelye. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American towns, landmarks and scenery in the early twentieth century, made this negative around 1900 to 1906, a period when women's colleges were gaining wider public attention. The picture offers a record of the campus as it looked before many later additions.
