Woodward Hall and the Liberty Tree stand together on the campus of St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland, a pairing that ties a working school building to a symbol of colonial resistance. The name refers to the liberty trees that Americans gathered under during the protests against British taxes in the 1760s and 1770s, and Annapolis, a port and capital, was a center of that opposition. This view was made about 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of American towns and landmarks for travelers and print buyers. The glass negative has a crack along its right side, a reminder of how fragile these early photographic plates were.
