Vanderbilt Hall, the Gothic-style dormitory on Yale's Hillhouse Avenue campus in New Haven, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced views like this one for sale to travelers, tourists and schools, and its photographers worked largely with large-format cameras that made sharp detail possible. Dating to between 1895 and 1910, the view captures the university as it looked when it was still expanding its residential halls, showing an institution working to present itself as a place of tradition and learning.
