Gurley Memorial Hall stands on the campus of the Emma Willard Seminary in Troy, New York, a school founded in 1814 by Emma Hart Willard, who argued that women deserved a serious education. The seminary was one of the earliest American institutions devoted to advanced schooling for young women. This large glass negative, made on an 8 by 10 inch plate and dated in its record to about 1905, captures the campus in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers across the country to document its places, and its views of schools like this one show the architecture and grounds of the period.
