Few Harvard landmarks are as tied to student memory as this gate, which the class of 1887 gave to the university and which stands near Memorial Hall in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Memorial Hall, designed by Charles Gambrill and Henry Richardson and completed in the 1870s, honors Harvard men who died in the Civil War, and its Gothic bulk gives the campus much of its character. This view comes from a large glass-plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, campuses and scenery in the early twentieth century. The plate's date range of about 1900 to 1920 places it when Harvard's old yard was becoming a showcase for its traditions.
