Fresh Pond is a kettle-hole pond on the edge of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and this glass negative shows its shoreline and a path winding along it from the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of views of American towns, parks and scenic spots between about 1900 and 1920, made this image as one of many photographs marketed to a public eager to see landscapes they might visit or hang on the wall. The pond had long been a popular place for walking, boating and, in winter, ice harvesting, so the scene captures a recreational landscape that was just beginning to draw crowds from the surrounding city. The 8 by 10 inch glass plate, donated to the Library of Congress in 1949 by the State Historical Society of Colorado, preserves the fine detail that the company's large-format work is known for.
