A living canopy of willows bends over this Berkshire road in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, turning an ordinary country lane into a shaded tunnel. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1915, specialized in views of American towns, scenery, and travel destinations. Stockbridge, in the hills of western Massachusetts, drew summer visitors in those years, and scenes like this one helped promote the region's rural charm. The picture is a useful record of how a tree-lined road looked before widespread automobile traffic reshaped such routes.
