The gardens at the Stockbridge summer home of Joseph Hodges Choate, the New York lawyer who served as United States ambassador to Britain from 1899 to 1905, stood in a village that drew wealthy families from New York and Boston in the years around 1900. Those families built large summer houses set among formal plantings and lawns. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to record scenic places and notable sites for souvenir views and postcards. The negative is dated only to between 1910 and 1920, so its exact year is uncertain.
