The Surfside Hotel stood in Gloucester, the old fishing port on Cape Ann north of Boston, and this view was made as a glass negative about 8 by 10 inches. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many of these negatives, sold scenic views of resorts and towns to postcard makers and travel publishers, and Gloucester's summer hotels drew city visitors who came by train and steamer. The record dates the negative only to roughly 1905 to 1915, so it likely shows the hotel during the peak years of seaside resort travel in New England. The image is a useful record of how such hotels presented themselves to visitors in that period.
