The Draper Hotel was a prominent lodging in Northampton, a Connecticut River Valley city and the seat of Hampshire County in western Massachusetts. This c1907 view survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sold photographs and hand-colored prints of American towns, resorts and landmarks to tourists and merchants in the early 1900s. Hotels of this kind served travelers arriving by rail and visitors to the area's colleges, so the picture records a building that was central to the town's commercial life. The negative was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
