The Forbes Library in Northampton, Massachusetts, is the subject of this glass plate negative, one of several views of American towns and institutions that the Detroit Publishing Company made around the turn of the twentieth century. The firm sold its scenic and architectural photographs as postcards, prints, and lantern slides, so a building like this was documented with the sort of straightforward, well-lit exterior view that suited a broad market. The 8 x 10 inch negative carries the firm's catalog number, and it came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Its record gives only a date range, so the exact day it was taken is unknown.
