Looking across the Connecticut River from the heights of Forest Park, this view takes in the bend of the water and the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, as it stood in the decades around 1900. The Detroit Publishing Company, which hired photographers to document American towns, landscapes and tourist sites in this period, produced such views for sale as postcards and illustrated books. Forest Park, laid out on the city's outskirts in the 1880s, was a popular place for residents to picnic and take in the valley, which is why a vantage point there became a favored subject. Note that this glass negative is broken in half crosswise, so only part of the original plate survives.
