Brattleboro is a town in southeastern Vermont, on the Connecticut River just across from New Hampshire, and this view offers a glimpse of that stretch of water. The Detroit Publishing Company issued scenic views of towns, rivers and resorts across the United States, and it sold pictures like this to travelers and to the postcard and souvenir trade in the early 1900s. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from between 1900 and 1910, and it shows the kind of riverside landscape that drew summer visitors to New England's river valleys. Negatives like this one were the working originals from which the company's printed views were made.
