The high banks above the Genesee River at Mount Morris, New York, show the steep rock walls that gave this stretch of gorge its nickname, the Grand Canyon of the East. The site later became part of Letchworth State Park, which owes much of its existence to William Pryor Letchworth, who worked to preserve the gorge as public land. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1895 and 1910, when the firm sold views of American scenery as travel pictures and postcards. The plate captures the river and cliffs in the period before the park's facilities and roads were fully developed.
