Few hotels in the Canadian Rockies are as recognizable as the Banff Springs Hotel, shown here beside the Bow River in the years before 1910. The Canadian Pacific Railway built the hotel in the late 1880s to draw travelers into the mountains, and its steep roofs and turrets give it the look of a Scottish castle set against pine-covered slopes. The surrounding park, established in 1885 as Rocky Mountains Park, was among the first national parks in Canada and helped make the area a destination for rail tourists. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative came from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented scenic places for travel promotion.
