Mount Assiniboine rises on the border between Alberta and British Columbia, a steep pyramid of rock and ice often called the Matterhorn of the Canadian Rockies. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1910, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sold views of North America to travelers and to people who never left home. The picture's composition suits that promotional purpose, presenting the peak as a wilderness destination worth the journey. The State Historical Society of Colorado gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1949.
