Lake Louise, set against its glacier-capped peaks in the Canadian Rockies, is the subject of this three-plate panorama, which was assembled from three glass negatives shot in sequence. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that issued photochrome and photographic views of scenic America and abroad, made many views of the lake from the chalet that stood on its shore, then a popular stop for travelers on the Canadian Pacific Railway. The lake lies within Banff National Park, established in 1885 as Canada's first national park, and it drew visitors from the early 1900s onward who came to see its turquoise water and the mountains rising behind it.
