Two glass negatives joined into one wide view show the Rondout Valley from Sky Top, high above Lake Mohonk in New York's Shawangunk Mountains, with the Mohonk Mountain House sitting on the lakeshore below. The Smiley family, Quakers, founded the resort in 1869 as a retreat for walking, scenery, and an alcohol-free way of life. The Detroit Publishing Company issued many views like this one in the early 1900s, aimed at travelers and the growing tourist trade. The panoramic format shows how carefully such resort views were composed to pair the hotel grounds with the broad natural setting around them.
