Reed's Lake, on the edge of East Grand Rapids, sets this view of a street called The Drive apart from other scenes on the board, and the record notes a possible church or religious building at the left. The glass negative, eight by ten inches, was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded towns and resorts across the United States in the years before 1920. Lakeside roads like this one drew summer visitors arriving by streetcar and automobile, so the scene offers a useful glimpse of early twentieth-century suburban life. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
