Pine Grove Park's river drive in Port Huron, Michigan, follows the St. Clair River, where a steady stream of lake freighters moved between Lake Huron and the industrial cities downstream. The record names a freighter called the Umbria among its subjects, so the view pairs a leisurely park road with working commercial shipping, a common mix in turn-of-the-century river towns. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative sometime between about 1900 and 1910, when it produced many views of American towns, parks and waterways for sale to travelers and publishers. The large 8 by 10 inch plate would have recorded fine detail in both the riverbank and the ship.
