A tall smokestack rises beside a river in Ypsilanti, Michigan, a small city on the Huron River southwest of Detroit that grew around milling and manufacturing. The river is identified only as probable, since the title was devised by the cataloger. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers worked across the country between 1900 and 1910 and sold views as postcards and travel prints. Made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative, it records the industrial landscape that such commercial photographers often treated as a sign of local growth.
