The Saginaw River and its bridges anchor this view of the city's riverfront in east-central Michigan. Saginaw grew rich on lumber in the late nineteenth century, when logs floated down the river to sawmills and the finished boards shipped out by rail and boat, so the waterfront was the center of that trade. The picture survives as a 5 by 7 inch glass negative, dated roughly between 1915 and 1925, when Detroit Publishing Company photographers were documenting American towns and landscapes for commercial distribution. The bridges and waterfront show how closely the city's commerce depended on the river.
