South Saginaw Street was the commercial heart of downtown Flint, Michigan, and this glass-plate view dates from roughly 1915 to 1925, when the city was growing from its carriage-making roots into a center of automobile manufacturing. The Detroit Publishing Company made the negative. The firm sold views of American towns and landscapes, mostly as postcards and prints for travelers and local businesses. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
