This 5 by 7 inch glass negative records an Austin Machinery Corporation steamroller at work on a road, dated April 26, 1921. Its location is only a cataloger's probable attribution to Michigan, so the scene is best read as a view of early road building rather than a fixed place. The picture belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's commercial output, which documented American towns, industry and transportation in the early twentieth century. In the early 1920s, steam-powered rollers like this one compacted gravel and macadam surfaces as states expanded their road networks during the good roads movement.
