Tourists crowd around a fruit seller in what the cataloger believes is Nassau, the Bahamian port that became a winter destination for American visitors in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold hand-colored and black-and-white views of places across the country and abroad, issued many such scenes of travelers buying fresh coconuts and tropical fruit from roadside vendors. The title was devised by the cataloger rather than taken from a caption, so the exact location is an informed guess. Its glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1915, a period when steamship lines were promoting the islands to northern tourists.
