Bay Street was the main commercial thoroughfare of Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, and this c1906 view captures it as a working street of shops and colonial-era buildings. The photograph was made as a dry plate glass negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across North America and beyond to document towns and scenery and then sold the views to tourists and collectors. Nassau was drawing growing numbers of winter visitors from the United States in these years, and that demand helped make street scenes like this one popular souvenirs.
