Cargadores, the men who hauled goods on their backs through Mexico City, are the subject of this glass negative, which measures five by eight inches. The record credits William Henry Jackson, based on an 1898 catalog of his views, and dates it to between 1880 and 1897. Porters like these were a common sight in the city's crowded streets and markets, where heavy loads often moved on human shoulders rather than by cart. Notice how much weight the men carried relative to their own frames.
